Forest Harvesting & Thinning

Forest Harvesting and Thinning

At Ecoplan Forestry, we understand that harvesting can be both the most rewarding and the most stressful part of owning a forest. Many landowners have been financially burned by unclear pricing, poor communication, or rushed operations that caused long-term damage. That’s why we do things differently.

Harvesting for You — Not for the Contractor

Ecoplan acts solely as your representative, not the contractor’s. We never profit from the sale of timber. Instead, we agree a percentage-based fee for managing the harvest, ensuring our only incentive is to maximise your return and protect your woodland.

We prepare the full tender, manage the process from start to finish, and provide constant oversight. You remain in control at every stage.

Forest Harvesting

Clear Contracts, Fair Terms

Every harvest we manage includes two separate legal agreements:

  • A Client Agreement between you and Ecoplan, which outlines our role and responsibilities as your agent.
  • A Timber Sale Contract between you and the Purchaser, which we draft, witness, and enforce on your behalf.

These are not vague promises — they are robust, enforceable contracts backed by experience and oversight.

The Ecoplan Docket System

Every load of timber removed from your site is tracked using our custom Harvest Docket System, with full weighbridge statements and transparent records. No timber is removed without your knowledge.

We also operate a WhatsApp group for every harvest — connecting you, Ecoplan, the contractor, and the haulier — so that everyone is informed, nothing is missed, and no decisions are made behind your back.

Forest Thinning

Operational Oversight and Standards

As your forestry agent, we:

  • Approve and supervise the contractor
  • Ensure correct thinning intensities or clearfell practices
  • Enforce environmental protections (e.g. brash mats, aquatic buffers, heritage exclusions)
  • Monitor site tidiness and contractor behaviour
  • Inspect stump heights, damage, and residual stand condition

All of this is included as part of our role — not extra.

CCF vs. Conventional Harvesting

We also support alternative systems like Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), where appropriate. This can provide regular income while preserving forest cover and biodiversity. Whether you’re thinning conifers or considering a selective harvest, we’ll explain your options clearly and support you in choosing the right approach for your objectives.

Tree Felling Licence (TFL)

In Ireland, a TFL is legally required for most tree felling activities. This system is designed to protect the environment, promote biodiversity, and ensure sustainable forest management. Licences are issued by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), and applications must include full details of the proposed felling — such as location, tree species, volume, intended methods, and detailed maps and harvest plans. While some exemptions apply, failing to obtain a licence when one is required is an offence under forestry legislation. A valid TFL helps ensure that harvesting operations meet all regulatory and environmental standards.
